Beautiful... and safe: Tasmania's low crime rates

Tasmania have a war on trees, but there seems to be a much more successful war on crime going on. While Tasmania started out as a Penal Colony (as we saw in Myles's blog post), taking some of the British Empire's worst criminals, today Tasmania has the lowest crime rate in the entire country of Australia. Since the beginning of the century, Tasmanian crime has dropped by 57%, with the lowest rate in recorded history being 2012-13 (there was a slight increase last year). White collar crime, like fraud, has dropped the most by a baffling 82 percent.
The Tasmanian police department is quite humble about this amazing decrease, crediting it to "a complex phenomena being seen nationwide." Smarter policing, intelligent crime solving and other factors have led to this historic decrease in crime. The police commissioner, Donna Adams, says that "high-visibility policing around late night venues was helping drive down public place assaults, ... Vehicles are more secure, manufacturers have invested time in ensuring their vehicles are more secure and less likely to be stolen." Adams refuses to take any credit for herself. Even after all this humbleness, we see that Tasmania has the lowest crime rate in the entire country, and that is to the credit of the Tasmanian police department, spreading knowledge and information to keep their citizens safe.

  2. Interesting find, Avi! I think there are a lot of variables at play. I wonder if Tasmania's homogeneity helps it experience fewer problems, as may be the case for some of the safest countries in the world such as Japan and Denmark. 90% of the island is Caucasian, whereas there is a larger ethnic minority population in the mainland. Another factor might be Australia's strict gun control policy.
