Ship Stern Bluff

Ship Stern Bluff (Devil's Point) is a popular surfing destination found off the south east coast of Tasmania on Tasman's peninsula. Located in Tasman National Park, the right reef break is capable of producing waves similar to those found in Pipeline and Teahupo'o in Hawaii and Tahiti, respectively. Iconic of these beautiful waves is the concept of reef break where these massive swells "break" onto shallow coral reefs resulting in stunning barrels and ultimately, an amazing surfing experience.
As with many of these waves, getting to them poses the first challenge. Ship Stern Bluff requires a 45 minute drive toward Marion Bay followed by an hour walk through Australian brush. Finally, when you arrive at the shore, an 150 meter paddle is required to get out to the wave. Moreover, if this isn't enough discouragement, keep in mind that below the waves is an extremely sharp coral reef along with white pointer sharks that are known to live in the vicinity; with the closest hospital 4 hours away (one hour including walking), any wrong move will essentially lead to your doom.
Weather conditions for the wave are usually best during the winter months when there is little or no wind. And although you may be battling frigid waters, at least you won't have to be dealing with gale force winds!
While I understand that surfing isn't necessarily on our agenda while we're in Tasmania, I figured that talking about these waves gives us an idea of the underwater topography surrounding the island.
